***Important*** Our testing revealed several bugs, some of which render the remote virtually unusable, so it might be wise to hold off on any firmware updates for now.
A week after releasing the new SwitchBot universal remote, the company has released an update that allows it to work with Apple TV. The update was originally scheduled to release in mid-July, but it was released today (June 28) and came as an early surprise to many who already purchased the device.
The update also includes support for Amazon’s own streaming device running Fire TV. While the universal remote is designed to work with devices that use IR (infrared), it also uses Bluetooth to connect directly to other SwitchBot devices.
The remote control that comes with Apple TV is a similar device that also uses infrared and Bluetooth to communicate with the Apple TV, uses Bluetooth to connect to streaming media, and uses infrared to control functions such as TV volume.
This is reportedly one of several planned updates to the SwitchBot universal remote, which is advertised to work with Matter, although in reality it will only be available for the Matter platform through one of the company’s own Matter Bridges, such as Apple Home. Includes Hub 2 and new Hub Mini (original hub could not receive required Matter updates).
Another new feature added that was previously unavailable is that if you have the company’s own robot curtain paired with the device, the device now offers preset opening positions – 10%, 30%, 50% or 70% – all this is accessible via a shortcut. button on the device itself, under the main LED display.
You can buy the Universal Remote on Amazon.com for $59.99 and the Hub Mini (Matter) for $39.00.
